INTRODUCING OUR NEW NEXT GENERATION MOUTHPIECES!

For the last few years we have been creating new mouthpiece designs and enhancing existing ones using our proprietary "vector design" mouthpiece design software. This custom program, when used in conjunction with our computer controlled CNC lathe, allows us to "single-point cut" the rims and cups of our mouthpieces. This gives the cups a perfectly smooth finish, without machine marks. Even more importantly, the new lathe and design software has given us expanded flexibility to refine our classic designs, and develop all-new, improved designs for many of the leading players we work with - all at an unprecedented rate.

After more than two years of refining our technique and making countless prototypes, we now make virtually all of our standard and PRANA mouthpieces completely on our CNC lathe. The results have been universally well received. We are pleased to finally make this next generation of Monette mouthpieces available to all our clients everywhere.

OUR NEW "S" SERIES (SLAP!) MOUTHPIECES

Many of our latest mouthpiece designs have a distinct new shape to the cup, which we call the "S Series." The first of these new mouthpieces was born several years ago when Dave Monette came up with the improved MF III mouthpiece for Maynard Ferguson. The original idea was to keep the basic MF II rim, but upgrade the cup design to improve every aspect of how the mouthpiece plays and sounds. You can hear the results on Maynard's new "live" CD, which was released in early April 2006.

Over the next few years, we started adapting this design concept to other sizes of Monette mouthpieces. We made hundreds and hundreds of prototypes before these new designs ever made it into the hands of any clients, making subtle adjustments to optimize the design details for each rim and cup size we make. These new designs have been field-tested by Wynton, Maynard and many other top players we work with in some of the most demanding playing situations imaginable.

WHY DO WE CALL THEM "SLAPS?"

The "S" series mouthpieces hold intensity better at soft dynamics, and offer a wider variety of articulation. When you play aggressively on them, the impact at the start of each note can sound and even feel like a "slap!" Hence the nickname here at the shop, which has seemed to stick.

The top part of the cup is slightly more bowl shaped, which helps produce a larger sound. The "turn" of the "S" in the cup profile (where the mouthpiece cup turns from concave to convex) is more pronounced, making the mouthpiece more efficient for a faster response. The bottom of the cup has a more generous blend into the throat, which produces larger "targets' on every note so the mouthpiece is more forgiving to play.

"You may call these 'SLAPS,' but I think you're going to be calling them 'STANDARDS,' because this sets the new standard!"

"I've been playing the same mouthpiece for decades and have never been one to chase after the 'holy grail' of mouthpieces. After meeting Dave and talking about why 'standard' mouthpieces play the way they do - and not just subjective theory but actual physical science - I became very intrigued. Dave designed me a PRANA and I haven't looked back!! I get a bigger, fatter sound with sizzle when I need it. Very even pitch center from the bottom to the top - and all of that with LESS physical effort!! Go figure!! I just assumed working hard was part of playing trumpet’ With my PRANA I can concentrate more on making music!! Dave has taken trumpet mouthpieces to a new level. I can't recommend them enough. Thanks Dave for making my life a lot easier!”

”This is really a breakthrough in brass technology! Its so easy to play - the sound spirals out of the horn. The response is so fast its startling – and the intonation is vastly improved. I recently came back from not playing for 6 weeks, and with this new mouthpiece I could immediately feel an amazing vibration in the horn. My chops don't feel swollen at all as I play this mouthpiece - it makes my lips and embuchure feel much more secure. I can play louder, softer, and I don't have to reach for pitches - they're just there!

I've played all the different brands of mpces during my career, and this works much better for me than anything else I’ve ever played. Thanks Dave!”

"David Monette has frequently pioneered new ventures in trumpet and mouthpiece development. These new SLAP mouthpieces are incredibly outstanding!!!!! Highlights of the latest mouthpieces include ones ability in the following areas: accuracy of pitch, ease of contrasting varieties of articulation, presence of tone and consistancy of tonal quality, evenness of response in all ranges, and tonal beauty in contrasting dynamic extremes. In addition to all this, the mouthpieces are extremely consistant, so that my Bb and C trumpet mouthpieces are a perfect match.”

"There's a whole new life to the sound... there is a projection and a presence that is notably superior to the previous generation PRANA, which to that point was the best mouthpiece I had ever played!"

Keith Johnson

"The new Monette 'Slap' mouthpieces help bring to life still more color and depth in my sound, while providing the same constancy and stability of pitch which distinguishes all Monette mouthpieces."
