WYNTON PLAYS HIS NEW P3 LIVE AT OUR SHOP
WYNTON MARSALIS
PLAYS A PRIVATE CONCERT FOR US AT OUR SHOP ON THE NEW PRANA 3 TRUMPET!
A little over a year
ago,Wynton Marsalis took delivery of the prototype PRANA 3 Bb trumpet.
Dave Monette delivered the horn in person at a small group concert Wynton
gave in Phoenix. After the concert that night, Wynton said he liked
the horn so much he wanted to show everyone at the shop what he could
do with the new instrument. A few days later, a light went on when Dave
realized that Wynton's small group tour was headed to the West Coast
with a day off between Napa and Seattle. The phone call was made on
a Friday, and on Sunday at noon Wynton and Raymond (one of Wynton's
road managers)
drove into our parking
lot after a 12 hour "hit and run" from the previous gig the
night before. On zero sleep but with seemingly endless energy, school
came into session and we proceeded to get a real education of what Wynton
can with a new trumpet.
Wynton played with
our favorite rhythm section, the Gary Hobbs Trio, with special guest
Portland trumpeter Thara Memory. Wynton kept the audience of well over
200 totally under his spell. He played things we couldn't even dream
of, and made it all sound outrageously musical and totally effortless!
We got dozens of calls and E-mails for weeks after the show, with people
commonly saying it was the best concert of any kind they had ever attended.

WYNTON PLAYS "LIVE" TV SHOW WITH NEW HORN!
HE BREAKS-IN OUR FIRST "NEXT GENERATION" P3 Bb THE SAME DAY HE GOT IT PLAYING THE HIGHER GROUND HURRICANE RELIEF CONCERT ON PBS TV
The very first "Next Generation" PRANA trumpet, serial number #2001, was made playable at our shop just a few days before the HIGHER GROUND HURRICANE RELIEF BENEFIT CONCERT, in September 2005. Dave Monette got a call from Wynton just the day before the concert, saying that he had damaged his first PRANA 3 Bb. Dave and the shop crew scrambled to put the finishing touches on the new horn, and Dave immediately got on a plane to New York to deliver the prototype new instrument in time for the live TV concert. Wynton played the first few notes onstage during the dress rehearsal, and never looked back!
The concert that day was broadcast live for five hours nationally here on PBS. Wynton was all over the horn, as always, and his sound was even more present and penetrating than before. This was an amazing evening of music, fellowship, and of course, charity fundraising.
In addition to performances by Wynton and fellow Monette client Ryan Kisor in the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, the concert also featured several other Monette clients. New Orleans natives Irvin Mayfield (who lost his father in the flood), Marlon Jordan (who spent 5 days on his roof waiting to be rescued), and Terence Blanchard (whose house was also damaged in the flood) had all been directly affected by the hurricane - but they all rose to the occasion and played their hearts out. This was an emotionally packed evening, which ended with a New Orleans 2nd Line dance by members of the LCJO and several dozen celebrities, friends and contributors. As the procession passed Dave's seat out in the hall, members of the LCJO staff motioned for him to join the group, which ended up back onstage playing and dancing for at least another half hour after the TV cameras were finally shut off.
