Scotty Barnhart Visits the Monette Shop During a Break
From the Count Basie Orchestra
Scotty was in Seattle playing the Paramount Theatre with
the Count Basie Orchestra
and took an afternoon to visit our Portland shop.
Four of the shop staff, Dave, Tom, Dean W. and Travis
then headed up to Seattle the following day to hear the band.
From the softest softs to the loudest louds, the band
was always laid back and in control. Scotty explained to us that
the band is so tight because half of the band was actually hired by Count
Basie himself before he passed away in 1984. Each new member of the
band plugs himself into the band on a live show - there are no rehearsals!
Therefore, the band actually has a "memory" that is carried forward with
each new member. Backstage, it was evident that each member was thoroughly
enjoying the experience.
Scotty plays the jazz book with the band and had several
plunger solos out in front. The sound he produced filled the room
with a force that you felt as well as heard. Scotty uses a B937 trumpet. |
